Behavioural Correlates of Body Ownership in Immersive Virtual Reality

by Mel Slater, University of Barcelona and University College London

It has been shown that virtual reality can be successfully used to induce the illusion of body ownership and agency with respect to a virtual body that substitutes the own body. However, less attention has been paid to the consequences of this for attitudes and behaviour. Here, we describe some experiments that have started to explore the attitudinal and behavioural correlates of the illusion of body ownership with respect to a body that has important differences from the own body.

Mel Slater is ICREA Research Professor at the University of Barcelona, and also holds a part time position as Professor of Virtual Environments, University College London. In Barcelona he co-leads the Event Lab . He holds an Advanced ERC grant TRAVERSE and leads the FP7 project VERE.
