    Glaucoma and the retinal degenerative diseases are major causes of vision loss and blindness worldwide. As one approach to identify new and more effective treatment strategies for these neurodegenerative diseases, we have been using high content screening approaches with primary retinal cells to identify small molecules that promote the differentiation and survival of retinal ganglion and photoreceptor cells. Among the leads that have been identified though this screen are a number of broad spectrum kinase inhibitors that promote cell survival both in vitro and in vivo.
