Summary: Most cancers are immunogenic and the natural immune response against cancers profoundly influences prognosis. Passive immunotherapy of cancers by direct targeting with monoclonal antibodies is already a major success. Recently, also vaccination against established cancers and redirection of T cell responses by checkpoint control blockade have led the way to a new era of cancer therapy, that exploits the awesome power of cell-mediated immunity. Intense collaboration between academic institutions and industry in Europe can establish new standards for effective treatment of cancers by combination of immunotherapy with classical treatment modalities and novel small molecule inhibitors.
